I like Braudel very much -- but he did define capitalism as consisting
only in an "upper layer" of international finance, and that makes his
remarks on the question of origins suspect. On the other hand, his
rather peculiar way of dividing up the "economy" does illustrate
vividly the way in which theory (conscious or spontaneous)
determines what "facts" mean.
