This is an interesting question which does not have, I think, a pat answer.
The Machinists Union, refusing to give in to Johnson's "jawboning"
against inflation won a good contract from one or more of the airlines --
and that in many ways contributed to the eventual defeat of the U.S.
in Vietnam. I wouldn't exactly call it "progressive," but it did indicate
that there were limits to u.s. workers' gullibility in giving in to
patriotism (anti-communism).
