[PEN-L:9655] RE: Fred and Henry

Subject: Fred and Henry
Regarding Henry Liu's work as a financier
and Marxist, Engels was a capitalist. Marx
was subsidized by Engels income. It would
seem that Engels' practical experience with
capital was an important corroboration of
Marx's theoretical understanding, even if
they don't discuss it that way. At any rate,
there is the Engels precedent in the Marxist
movement for capitalist-revolutionaries.

Response:
If there is a problem with Henry's financial speculations then let me join
him and plead GUILTY too. I have a Mutual Fund for my retirement which I
hope grows and not diminishes (I will never retire from my non-college
activities). Further, as Chairman Mao pointed out to Dr. Li Zhisui: "I am
not a Saint, and I am not a monk." or as Chairman Mao also pointed out
allegedly: "Sometimes my deeds do not match my words." I too make all sorts
of what I like to think are "tactical compromises" in terms of language,
tone, content and basic survival in a sytem under which I live but prefer to
see radically "changed"--another "tactical compromise".
I have gain immeasurably from Henry's writings, passion and very deep and
substantive knowledge about many things about which I am very ignorant. If
his financial activities are giving him the time to conduct and spread his
research and thoughts then I hope his portfolios do well for him and his
colleagues. It is clear to me where his passions and commitments lie and the
true nature of those passions and commitments.
