In my opinion, on balance, the New Left had a better anti-racist consciousness than today's Left, such as it is, as Doug Henwood would say. Part of the "such as it is" of today's left is that it has a weaker anti-racism.

Charles: This is a mistake in grammar. Doug Henwood uses the phrase "The left, such as it is". I don't mean to attribute to him my specific critique of today's left on racism.
