[PEN-L:8364] Will Nato intervene in Bangladesh next?

EU wants Bangladesh stability

By Zaglul A Chowdhury

The Times of India News Service

Dhaka: The European Union has expressed satisfaction over the
``improvement'' of the political situation in Bangladesh since the events
early this year. The EU, which had expressed deep concern over the
political unrest in the country about six months ago, now finds the
relations between the government and opposition more healthy and also
better --though both remain at daggers drawn at each other over major
political issues.

``We find signs of moderation between the two main political parties and we
hope this will continue,'' the European Union ambassadors told media
persons here Monday night. They said that things have changed for the
better despite a short-notice `hartal' on Sunday called by three main
groups in Parliament --the Bangladesh National Party, the Jatiya Party and
the Islamic fundamentalists Jamaat-e-Islami --protesting fiscal measures
the government proposed in its 1999-2000 budget.

The EU had earlier expressed concern over the confrontationist politics in
Bangladesh heightened by a series of `hartals' and general strikes and
violent incidents which claimed several lives. The EU ambassador, De Souza
Menezes, and envoys from the EU nations said that as development partners
their countries and the international organisations are keen on political
stability in Bangladesh.
