I hear from friends who were there that there was a wide variety of opinion
among the protesters. Some were anxious to taste the material fruits of
western capitalism. Others were criticising the regime from the left. It
would not be proper to lump them all together.

Some facts.  The "Goddess of Democracy" statue  differs from "Liberty" in
that the torch was in the *left*, not *right* hand--an obviously
intentional symbolism.  "Liberty,"  in any case is a *French* symbol,
deriving from the Great Revolution, presented as a gift to the American
people.  And, if Mr. Craven had ever listened to the frequent radio
reportages from Tiananmen, he would have heard only one song, constantly
repeated, in the background--no, not the "Starspangledbanner," the
*Internationale*.
