The Orfield book, or one of them, is Metropolis.  Orfield is also a
political scientist who is pioneering in the use of newly-available (in the
sense of being accessible) electronic mapping to study regional economies
and politics.  Brookings, who promotes Orfield, has an urban project
oriented towards repopulation, information on which can be gleaned from
their web site.  My forthcoming book (edited volume from M.E. Sharpe, due in
July at last report) on state and local finance has a chapter on city-suburb
economic relations.
