I don't see why we can't think about _degrees_ of splits within the ruling
class. There are always some splits, though usually they're minor. But
they're an important source of possibilities for the opposition, just like
the late competition between the US and the USSR.

Of course, splits within the ruling class -- i.e., competition amongst
capitals -- is also a source of economic crises, but that's another story.
