[PEN-L:4138] LaRouche

Barkley,

Where does LaRouche get so much money ? Any indications of ties to the "intelligence community" , besides the obvious ?

The LaRouche newspaper seems to have a lot of professional philosophers on staff. Is this an indication of intelligence agents ?

One minor correction is that I think it was later than 1975 that
LaRouche made his left-to-right jump. He ran for president in 1976 on the
"Labor Party" ticket, a front for his NCLC. I think he was still left at
that point and went right the next year, or thereabouts. I understand that
one factor in that was his second marriage, to a German woman. After that
he became obsessed with the GDR Stasi and also opened a lot of offices in
the FRG. Apparently once in the late 70s he announced that beards were a
sign of being a Stasi agent and a bunch of his followers ran out and
literally tore out their beards.
In the last years of his left identification his group identified
themselves as the "purest" Marxists around and attacked anybody supporting
black nationalism or feminism for distracting the working class from
revolution. They were (and are) also big pro-nuclear fusion. No identity
pomoizing there!
In more recent years he and his followers have tended to run in
Democratic Party primaries. In 1988 one of his followers, Nancy Spannaus,
was the official Democratic Party opponent of John Warner in his 1988 race
for reelection to the US Senate from Virginia, where LaRouche had relocated
his HQ to from NYC. The Dems had decided not to offer a candidate against
the pathetically popular Warner (ex hubby of Paul Mellon's daughter and Liz
Taylor and current boyfriend of Monica Lewinsky's interviewer from ABC). So
Spannaus was able to seize the nomination. I think she got about 20% of the
vote in the general election. Her husband was one of those jailed for fraud
along with LaRouche. Their son, Andrew, was a student of mine a few years
ago here at glorious JMU. He was a bright philosophy major and rather
discreetly quiet, but very committed to his parents' world view, his dad
still being in jail at the time.
