New orders for durable goods rose 2.4 percent in July, fueled by
increased demand for electronic and electrical equipment, the Commerce
Department reports....  Orders are 4.5 percent above the level reported
a year ago....  (Daily Labor Report, page D-1; Washington Post, page E1;
Washington Times, page B11)_____Orders placed with the nation's
manufacturers for durable goods unexpectedly rose in July, as demand for
aircraft and electronics offset a decline in auto orders that was linked
to the General Motors strike.  Excluding transportation goods, orders
recorded the biggest gain in almost a year....  (New York Times, page
D2)_____U.S. factories showed remarkable resilience in July and posted
the biggest gain in durable goods orders in eight months.  Despite the
Asian flu and the UAW strike against General Motors, orders for durable
goods, big-ticket items meant to last at least three years, shot up.
The gain was driven by businesses investing in new technology.  They
also stocked up on consumer goods in anticipation of the huge wave of
new home buyers looking to furnish their new digs....  (Wall Street

Data compiled by BNA in the first 34 weeks of 1998 show that the median
first-year wage increase in newly negotiated contracts equaled 3
percent, and the weighted average increase for settlements reported to
data in 1998 was 2.9 percent....  (Daily Labor Report, page D-3).

About 21 million people work nontraditional hours, and companies spend
$77 billion a year on added costs associated with fatigue because of
shiftwork, according to a page 1B graph in USA Today.  The cost of lower
productivity is given as $50 billion;  industrial accidents, $13.5
billion; heart disease/attacks, $5.5 billion; vehicle accidents and  job
injuries/deaths, $2.5 billion each; medical/mental illness, $2 billion;
and turnover/retraining costs, $1 billion. Source of the data is
