[PEN-L:348] Re: Re: Re: Saving Private Ryan

While on the subject of WWII, there is a movie and some books I'd like to
recommend:

1) "Stalingrad", a 1993 movie made in Germany that Stephen Spielberg
couldn't make in a million years. It is the real thing. A genuine antiwar
movie that makes you feel that the whole thing was obscene.

2) "900 Days", Harrison Salisbury's book on the siege of Leningrad. It is
also horrific, but it honestly reports that people fought off the Nazis
because they still believed in socialism.

3) Ernest Mandel's "The Meaning of WWII", a Verso book probably out-of-print.

4) Clive Ponting's "Armageddon", a history of WWII. Ponting is a Marxist
who also wrote the very fine "Green History of the World" and a major
biography of Winston Churchill that reveals him as a racist and a warmonger.

5) Jonathan Marshall's "TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT: SOUTHEAST ASIAN RAW MATERIALS
AND THE ORIGINS OF THE PACIFIC WAR". Marshall makes the case that war
between US and Japan was _exclusively_ about control of raw materials.
