After footie training one cold night in 1976, I got to talking to two very
old boys at the bar - veterans, as it turned out, of Passchendale (1917, I
think it was) .  Being 18, I asked 'em what it was like.

'No use asking, mate,' says the one who didn't turn back to his beer, 'you
stop being able to remember it properly when you get home.'

'I fuck'n remember it,' mumbles the other fella at the wall.

'Yeah, but ya can't tell blokes who weren't there, can ya?' protests the
first bloke.

'That's why we keep having fuck'n wars,' says the other.
