Re: centres of excellence

A bit of an exaggeration. Stars in the humanities and social sciences can
earn in the $100,000-150,000 range, plus perks. The perks can probably push
the total compensation package higher: I've heard of one star English prof
who was lured with a promise of a job for both his wife and his boyfriend;
another star English prof was bought a house in the Hollywood Hills, and
had his wine cellar trucked across country in a special shock-absorbing
vehicle. Profs in the hard sciences, especially medicine, do fall into the
$200,000+ category. Economics and finance profs often have side consulting
businesses that earn them six figures in addition to their salary. One
famous Nobel economist reportedly was paid $20,000 for writing a
breathtakingly shoddy 10-page report - but, hey, it's his name, not the
content that counts!
