Re: fast track
I would like to second Max's point about the "next step". As Thomas
Mann pointed out long ago (in Mario and the Magician, a parable about
fascism), it is never enough to just say no. Sooner or later, "no" runs
out of steam, so there needs to be an alternative. The progressive
trade crowd needs to put its heads together to come up with a
programmatic agenda that clearly embodies an alternative conception of
what trade is for and to whom it should be accountable. Past efforts,
well motivated though they have been, have remained at the level of
general principles. A true alternative would have at least some pieces
that could be formulated as legislation; these pieces would call
attention to the other perhaps more transformative pieces. How do we
get from here to there?
