[PEN-L:11703] Re: questions about part time jobs

U.S. part-time employment (economic & noneconomic) as percent of total
employment:

1960 11.1%
1970 13.7%
1980 16.4%
1990 16.5%
1997 16.6%

Most other OECD countries show a rise from the early 1970s to 1995 - though
a pretty steady-looking one, not a recent explosion. I wonder how much of
this is the result of women's entry into paid work, since they're more
likely to work p-t.

>From the boilerplate in Employment & Earnings: "Full-time workers are those
who usually worked 35 hours or more (at all jobs combined).... Part-time
workers are those who usually work less than 35 hours a week (at all
jobs)...." And "unpublished data are available for the hours worked in each
job and for usual hours." The monthly employment release
(http://stats.bls.gov:80/newsrels.htm) has data on multiple jobholding.
There are more multiple jobholders than officially unemployed.
