Just a few things:

John R. Logan and Harvey L. Molotch. _Urban Fortunes: The Political
Economy of Space_. University of California Press, 1987.

Allen J. Scott and Edward W. Soja. _The City: Los Angeles and Urban
Theory at the End of the Twentieth Century_. University of California
     Press, 1996.

Mike Davis. _City of Quartz: Excavating the Future in Los Angeles_.
     Vintage Books, 1992.

Carey McWilliams. _Southern California: An Island on the Land_. Gibbs
     Smith, 1973 [1946].

John Yinger. _Closed Doors, Opportunities Lost: The Continuing Costs
of Housing Discrimination_. Russell Sage Foundation, 1995.

Barkley Rosser has also written on this topic, including a review of
Paul Krugman's _Development, Geography, and Economic Theory_ which I
believe was to be published in the Journal of Economic Behavior and
Organization.

The National Bureau of Economic Research has some stuff on ghettos by David
M. Cutler in their "Working Paper Series" which I think can
be found at http://www.nber.org/.

Excellent choice.
