Thank you Jim Devine--at least someone missed the Daily Report while I
was gone.  In a group organized by the Labor Party I drove to Detroit
for Motown '97, the united labor demonstration on June 21.  This was
in favor of the workers at the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press,
who have been on strike/locked out for 2 years, since July, 1995.  All
of the labor bigwigs were there in a united show of support.  Rich
Trumka had an interesting not so new thought: "One big union."  I felt
that the labor movement was in the process of reinventing itself in a
very positive way.

Driving back I started to get sick, and I arrived in DC just in time
for emergency gall bladder surgery.  The result was that I missed a
lot of time.  In addition, while I was gone the local area network was
reorganized so that my postings to pen-l started to go to PENLAB, a
BLS work team.  Thus I could receive pen-l messages but not send
them--I first attempted to send this message was on July 11.  If you
can read this message you will know that I have gotten beyond these
problems and I expect to keep in touch.
