[PEN-L:11246] re: Montgomery Ward bounces severence checks

I wait with baited breath to see if MW bounces its checks to its creditors.

Lo the mighty have fallen! MW used to be one of the biggest retailers, back
when my grandfather was an executive there (early 1950s). An interesting
business biography would be one of MW's boss, S. L. Avery, who Pres. Truman
had dragged out of his office using bayonets. (He punished anyone who
abbreviated his name as I just did, for obvious reasons. He also fired my
grandpa.) Oh for the good old days (;-)), when industrial magnates had
personalities like Avery, Hearst, Henry Ford, Colonel McCormick of the
Chicago TRIBUNE (who tried to convince readers to convert to phonetic
spellings by using them in his newspaper, "frate" for "freight," etc.)
Nowadays it's just a bunch of suits, though they're just as mean.
