Position
Assistant or Associate Professor or Instructor, Labor Education and
Research Center (LERC), University of Oregon, Eugene. Full-time, 12-month
appointment, tenure related.
About LERC
LERC was established in 1977 as a department at the University of Oregon.
LERC offers education and research programs to Oregon's working adults,
labor organizations, and professionals in the field of labor and industrial
relations. LERC is a separate department reporting directly to the Provost
and is not associated with other schools or departments.
LERC's primary curriculum is composed of non-credit courses, workshops,
institutes and conferences offered throughout the state of Oregon. Programs
and courses cover a broad range of subjects including industrial relations,
collective bargaining, union leadership development, occupational safety
and health, labor law, grievance handling and arbitration, and worker
participation and joint labor management programs.
LERC faculty also conduct research and special projects in occupational
safety and health, economic development, worker participation, ecosystem
workforce development, organizing and arbitration.
The regular faculty is composed of five full-time faculty plus several
adjunct and visiting faculty. LERC publishes an annual Monograph series
and a series of working papers. The Center's main offices are on the
University of Oregon campus in Eugene, and LERC maintains a vigorous
program at the UO Portland Center. This position is located at the Eugene
office.
Position Description
The appointee will be a member of the full-time faculty. The position
involves two main areas, teaching and research. Faculty teach non-credit
and credit courses to union members, staff and officials as well as
enrolled university students. Faculty also organize and coordinate
workshops and institutes for labor and labor management audiences. Close
working relationships are to be developed and maintained with local and
national labor organizations, the Center's labor advisory committee, and
professionals in the field of industrial relations and labor education.
Faculty members are expected to engage in research and writing which makes
a creative and original contribution to the field of labor education and
labor relations. The appointee will be expected to take a leadership role
in building the Center's research agenda by conducting independent
research, responding to the requests of labor organizations and applying
for grants.
Preference will be given to candidates skilled in applied research with
knowledge of quantitative and qualitative methods in one or more of the
following areas: industry and workforce economic analysis, corporate
research, evolving models of work organization, and the global economy and
its impact on workers and labor relations.
Qualifications
Ph.D. preferred. Advanced degree required in appropriate fields including,
but not limited to, industrial relations, economics, or sociology.
Demonstrated abilities in qualitative and quantitative research.
Familiarity and experience with action research methodologies are strongly
desired, as is ability to generate external funding for research
activities.
Knowledge of labor organizations is essential, and experience in labor
organizations is helpful. Candidates must demonstrate instructional
abilities in adult education and the ability to relate well to working
adults.
Rank, Salary, and Starting Date
Rank and salary is commensurate with experience. Ph.D. is required for
assistant or associate professor rank. Other candidates (master's degree
required) will be considered for rank of instructor or senior instructor,
tenure related. Minimum salary is $42,000, with excellent benefits.
Starting date is negotiable, but no later than September 15, 1997.
