Two books which might be particularly useful to a beginning economist are:
"Race & Gender in the American Economy, Views from Across the Spectrum" ed.
Susan Feiner, 1994, Prentice Hall. This gives left, right, and centrist
views on a number of issues (the sympathy of the book, though, is clearly
left).
"The Economics of Women, Men, and Work" 2nd. ed, Francine D. Blau and
Marianne A. Ferber. This book applies gender analysis to more standard track
economics, and teaches some of the mathematical tools used by most
economists.
