I'm told that one explanation for #2 - which is cowardly and should be
roundly condemned - was the influence of the Farm Labor Organizing
Committee, which is led by a born againer (whose name escapes me at the
moment). He claimed that he was promoting the interest of his membership,
which is overwhelmingly Latino/a Catholic, but the membership was of course
not polled about what position to take. The FLOC leader reportedly prays
for at least 2 hours before making any major decision.
