Louis: I read this book out of curiosity. Wainwright's work is a good
place to find every nostrum that has caught on with post-Marxists:
postmodernism, localism, radical democracy, market socialism,
flirtation with Hayek, etc. Her take on Hayek is that the Eastern
Europeans have been intoxicated with libertarianism because of the
failures of socialist planning. She sympathizes with their disappointment,
but urges them to consider a less cruel alternative to the marketplace,
something warm and fuzzy like her brand of "civil society" based socialism. I
would pay top dollar to see a debate between her and Ellen Meiksins Wood
in a locked steel cage/fight to the finish debate. My money's on Wood.
