The project of the European Monetary Union was already in pieces before.
It break up openly in 1992, but I think it was dead even before, because
the project came in fact to light in the same years in which the Soviet
Union and the East collapsed. And remember that the first country
*against* the European Monetary Union is Germany.

What is now in question is if France could remain within the Deutsche
mark currency area, i.e. became a 'German' country as the small
'satellite' countries near her borders, or not; if this is economically
and socially feasible when this means to go in recession while Italy,
England and Spain, who went out the EMS and devalued, are going better.
