[PEN-L:1691] The Fall '95 issue of CovertAction

Urgent reading: the Fall 1995 issue of CovertAction magazine. It
contains interesting, well-written and informative articles on the
following subjects:

-- _NAFTA's Corporate Con Artists_, which details how the very
companies that were extolling the benefits of NAFTA for U.S.
workers and communities have cut jobs, moved plants to Mexico
and continued to violate labour right and environmental
regulations in Mexico.

--	_The Wonderful Life and Strange Death of Walter Reuther_
describes interesting aspects of both with regard to the career of
the former leader of the United Auto Workers.

--	_Armed and Dangerous_, about the rise of the use of private
police, the contemporary counterparts of the Pinkertons,
especially in situations involving labour-management
confrontations.

--	_The AFL-CIO In Moscow_, about the role that everyone's
favourite labour central has been playing in influencing labour
politics -- basically pushing the American corporate perspective
within the ex-USSR's unions.

--	_Workin' for the Man: Prison Labor_, about the growth of the
prison industrial complex and the use of prison labour in the U.S.
to produce goods for the external market (contracted to private
companies producing clothing, etc.) and to defray the costs of
running the prison system.

These articles help rebut the glib crap that we're inundated about the
workings of the free market by providing perspectives on what is
really happening in today's labour market. Recommended for
passing on to students and unionists alike.
