I have received several private queries for information on Kerala
state, India, to which I referred in a post a couple of weeks ago.  I
am no expert on Kerala, so perhaps someone more knowledgeable can
supplement this list, but here's a good start:

* several papers in Srinivasan & BArdhan (eds.) Rural Poverty in South
Asia (1988)
* an outstanding DPhil dissertation from Oxford by BG Kumar: "Poverty
and Public Policy: Government Intervention and Levels of Living in
Kerala, India" (1987)
* Kumar's 1979 IFPRI report (#5) "Impact of Subsidized Rice on Food
Consumption and Nutrition in Kerala"
* JC Caldwell's "Routes to Low Mortality in Poor Countries,"
Population anad Development Review, about 1986or87.
* several papers in Halstead, Walsh & Warren, Good Health at Low Cost
(1985).
*D Gwatkin article in Food Policy, circa 1979 (sorry can't remember
the title)
* 1975 monograph by the Centre for Development Studies: Poverty,
Unemployment and Development Policy: A Case Study of Selected Issues
With Respect to Kerala
* Jean Dreze and Amartya Sen's Hunger and Public Action makes many
references to Kerala, although it is not a study of Kerala per se.
