Smith and Laissez Faire
I did a book in 1983, Classical Political Economy, Primitive Accumulation, and
the Social Division of Labor. I have a couple of chapters on Smith and his
anti-laissez faire attitudes. I read him as an insecure petty bourgeois fellow
who was resentful of everybody who did not agree with him: peasants, rebellious
workers, successful business people, aristocrats ...
I am just now completing a revision of the book. My views of Smith have harden-
since then.
