Re: ALERT!

Sorry to reply so late to this.

There seems to be nothing wrong with the copy of Marx's _On The
Jewish Question_ in the Marx/Engels Online Library -- our resident
UNIX guru pronounced it clean. It would seem more likely the problem
was elsewhere, Mike, either in its transmission, or perhaps with the
disk it was stored on. (I hope you lost nothing important, workwise,
Mike!)

However, the administrator of csf.colorado.edu is running some virus
checks. Nothing has come up yet elsewhere.

This does raise an interesting scenario, though -- right-wing attack
against the ME archives! After all, who is more hated by the rabid
right than Herr Doktor? Mere mention of the name Karl Marx in various
Usenet newsgroups still the war-drums apounding, and I do, indeed,
'advertise' the archive in Usenet. Increased security precautions are
being examined.

And this raises a question for the list-general, and I would
appreciate as much feedback as possible, even if you only send
one-liner: Do you think it appropriate for the charter of pen-l that I
upload newly-created Marx/Engels etexts?

I asked Mike Perelman, and he suggested I "take to the masses", as it
were. I have only twice uploaded items -- both on the issue of free
trade -- but they were small, and far apart. I ask because pen-l
readers might have mailbox problems when a large item comes through --
such as, say, the currently-under-construction _Capital_, v.1.

There is rarely any constant onslaught of this material, but it does
come in sizable wallops -- for instance, the recently completed
_Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts_ clocked in over 300k in its
single burst to several lists.

Do you want this stuff? Or would you prefer I just run the monthly
Online Library Updates, with a "new material" section?

(In what may be my last upload of its kind, I'll follow this post up
with a just-completed copy of Marx's _Pre-Capitalist Economic
Formations_. Consider it a peace offering to Mike Lebowitz for his
corrupted disks, if nothing else. :)
