greetings

Top of the new year to you.

Many thanks to PEN-L comrades who wrote, but my signoff was
never meant to be anything but temporary, prompted by a two-week
separation from my computer and the absence of a NOMAIL option on
this server. [The sentence beginning "Sorry to do it this way,
but..." in my signoff post was not some crypto-sardonic farewell
message, but an apology to Michael P. for bothering him; the server
literally didn't recognize my existence on the list, and therefore
wouldn't implement my UNSUB command.]

PEN-L is a lifeline, and too much fun to think of leaving.

Over the break I stumbled across a wonderful essay by Oscar
Wilde, "The Soul of Man under Socialism", which I recommend to PEN-rs
who haven't seen it. Some may find its viewpoint a tad aesthetic,
but on the whole I think its message is liberating, and the essay is
full of good quotes in any case.

A sample:

"It is immoral to use private property in order to alleviate the
horrible evils that result from the institution of private property.
It is both immoral and unfair. Under Socialism all this will, of
course, be altered... The security of society will not [then] depend,
as it does now, on the state of the weather."--Oscar Wilde
