[OPE-L] Iran-US stand-off and the Cuban missiles crisis

Reading Seymour Hersh's article
http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/articles/070305fa_fact_hersh I had to
think of the historical analogy of the Cuban missiles crisis of 1962 (George
W. Bush would have just turned 16 at that time, and was living in Texas).

The difference is that the Russians and Cubans really had nuclear weapons,
but Iran doesn't have them. We are dealing here with a pre-emptive policy
against what might/could/would happen.

I previously quoted Hilary Clinton "This was his [i.e. Bush's decision to go
to war [in Iraq]. He went with an ill-conceived plan, an incompetently
executed strategy, and we should expect him to extricate our country from
this before he leaves office."

We can see better now what this "extrication" portends. Scary stuff really.
Maybe Hilary ought to read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_Strauss to get a
better appreciation of what we're dealing with here.

Macabre factoid: Elliott Abrams in his youth was a member of the Young
People's Socialist League for a while. I did not know that, when I tried to
figure out more about his life from the press reports
http://archives.econ.utah.edu/archives/pen-l/2003w35/msg00069.htm (of course
I am only an amateur writer, no Seymour Hersh).
