helpful overview of debates

Terminology, History and Debate: ?Caste? Formation or ?Class? Formation
Author: Bahl, Vinay
Source: The Journal of Historical Sociology, Volume 17, Numbers 2-3, June
2004, pp. 265-318(54)
Publisher: Blackwell Publishing

Also see older essay on caste in Irfan Habib's Essays on Indian History:
Towards a Marxist Perception (can't remember exact title of book)

Two much discussed books are the ones by Nicholas Dirks and Susan Bayly on
caste; both were written less than ten years ago. Neither book is Marxist
but both are historical and materialist to some degree.
