 Sumner was also an [URPE] Economy Connection member, and gave a wonderful
Stony Brook radio interview on Social Security, as well as participating
in a Town Meeting on Social Security in Staten Island a few weeks before

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Sumner
 Rosen.
It was his wish that we send this notice to everyone in his email address

ROSEN - Sumner M.
Sumner M. Rosen died peacefully today, August 17th 2005 at home,
surrounded  by his family, after a brief but valiant battle with cancer. The
 funeral will be on Friday August 19th at 11:30 am at The Plaza Memorial
Chapel, 630  Amsterdam Avenue at 90th Street in New York City.  In lieu
of flowers,  memorial contributions may be sent to Bâ??nai Jeshurun Social
Action  Fund  www.bj.org or The Five Borough Institute www.fiveborough.org.
Sumner  was> born in Boston in 1923.  He served in World War II, graduated
magna  cum laude  and Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in economics from
Harvard,
and  received a  Ph.D. from MIT.  Sumnerâ??s long and distinguished career
as an
academic and > as a social activist was marked by an unwavering devotion to
fighting
for the  rights of  working people everywhere.  He was a tenured professor
at
 Columbia  Universityâ??s School of Social Work, and upon retiring, became a
 founding member of The Five Borough Institute, a research and educational
 organization devoted to implementing progressive public policies. He is
survived
 by his  wife, Judith Davidoff, his son Max, his daughter Rebekah
Rosen-Gomez,
 and two grandchildren.
