ALBA Backs Honduras at OAS

Washington, Jun 26 (Prensa Latina) The member countries of the Bolivarian
Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) expressed on Friday at the
OAS their strong support of Honduran President Manuel Zelaya against
oligarchic efforts to break constitutional order in that territory.

In a resolution released during a special meeting of the OAS Permanent
Council, the ALBA members expressed their willingness to mobilize along with
the Honduran people against any attempt to thwart democratic reforms
implemented by Zelaya.

"This is all about a destabilizing political maneuver supported by the
highest ranking officers of the armed forces to try to prevent the popular
consultation scheduled for Sunday, June 28," they denounced.

The member countries of the Central American Integration System (SICA) also
condemned at OAS the pro-coup process against the government of Honduras and
requested support to keep democracy there. Nicaraguan Ambassador Denis
Moncada said that SICA rejects the technical coup process and considers this
situation an unprecedented historic circumstance threatening the full
exercise of democracy and the people's participation.

The special meeting had been convened by Honduras, who requested the OAS
send a mission in light of the crisis generated just two days before the
popular consultation by which the people will decide whether to install a
Constituent Assembly to reform the Constitution.
