My guess is that these puzzles can be generated by a computer, but a
computer could never generate a clue like "The Egyptian judge of the
dead, returning so with the flower". The answer is "Osiris". I should
mention that this is from the latest puzzle in the nation which is
composed by Frank Lewis, who is in his 90s! I only decided to subscribe
to the Nation in order to do the puzzle, which is not available on the
Columbia electronic version of the Nation. When the Nation announced a
year or so ago that it was eliminating the puzzle, there was such a huge
protest that they retained Lewis. When he croaks, they'd better find a
replacement or else I will terminate my subscription.
