I had issues with Paradise Now: the problem with this film is that it
explained suicide bombing in the context of an oedipal, father/son family
struggle and thus minimized the social, political, living-in-hell etiology
of these bombers. there are some shots of palestinian poverty and
checkpoints, but nothing that makes you scream "Do Something!" "Fight Back!"
---sort of reminds me of soderberg's "che" -- how if you were an alien from
outerspace and watched this film you wouldn't really know why he's fighting
in the jungle and then bolivia; the filmmaker fails to show why society was
so rotten that a revolution was necessary. The exact opposite of this
approach is "Soy Cuba" and "Battleship potemkin"
