[Marxism] Peru Congress suspends decrees that inspired indigenous fight

Is the Peruvian Congress giving the black spot t Garcia, the US' most
favorite Latin American President along with Colombia's Uribe, and both in
preference to Calderon who showed so much promise as a model puppet once.
(He hasn't gotten better, just weaker and thus slightly tougher on
Washington>)

Peru Congress suspends decrees that upset Indians
Jun 10th, 2009 | LIMA, Peru -- Peru's Congress has indefinitely suspended
two legislative decrees that prompted the Amazon Indian protests that turned
violent last week.

The suspension could help re-establish talks with leaders of Peru's 400,000
Amazon natives.

Indigenous groups say the decrees make it easier for foreign companies to
exploit their lands for oil, gas and logging. President Alan Garcia says the
laws are needed to help Peru develop.

The decrees were enacted last year to make Peruvian law meet requirements of
a free trade agreement with the U.S.

Road and river blockades in Peru's jungle that began in April turned violent
Friday when police moved against a road blockade.

At least 23 police were killed and Indian leaders say at least 30 civilians
died.
