Ah, thank you Tom Cod, this has been a revelation! Sincerely, I don´t
know what the hell I have been doing when I thought I was trying to
understand Argentinean politics and history these last 40 years.
Yes, _exactly 40 years_, because today´s my political birthday,
something I used to be happy about and now, thanks to less than 12 lines
by Tom Cod, has been demonstrated to be a hollow non-feat unworthy of
any form of rejoice.
Allow me to become a little personal on such a momentous instant in my
own life. The said delivery of political consciousness can be precisely
dated ton May 30, 1969, 6:45 AM, that is, the day after the people of
Córdoba rose up against the military dictatorship of those times and
took control of the city for two complete days. My first shock was in
the early morning, while taking breakfast before leaving to take the bus
that took me to High School. This was the moment in the day when I read
the newspaper, at a glance that up to that moment was usually cast on
the Sports (soccer) pages.
That day, instead, my giddy, sleepy and shortsighted attention was
captured by the picture and headlines of the newspaper. Perhaps such
state of unreliably somniferous mindlessness could explain the stupid
mistakes that ruined my political moves afterwards, those that Tom has
so deftly reduced to worthless rubbish.
The headlines read "Córdoba en manos de la población", and the pictures
and captions showed street fighting between heavily armed anti-mutiny
police and a joint front of workers and students. And the latter were
taking the place!!!
My life changed forever that cold, grey morning (BTW: just like today´s,
I mean today´s morning is cold and grey, not that my life is changing
forever).
It looks like I have wasted that time in the most "tsk, tskable" way.
If I only had had Mr. Cod´s wisdom available just then...
Wisdom has come too late for me to profit from it in any reasonable way.
In order to do so, I should start anew, and first of all endeavour to
forget all that I learnt during 40 years of a crassly mistaken, blind
and misguided process of political struggle. All I can say on my behalf
is that I have been earnest in the effort, but of course I reckon that
earnestness in error may be worse than levity in truth. In the process,
or maybe after it comes to succesful end, I will have to learn all the
intelligence and wise understanding of the concrete situation in
Argentina that anyone without blinkers can fathom in the deep piece by
Tom Cod, above.
This is unfeasible. Such a program would would take either 40 years full
time or 80 years part-time at least. My reasonable life expectancy (not
to speak of the conditions of such life) is of 30, 35 years.
