A valid point. But don't forget to factor in the role the US played in that
development. Post-WWII, the US, as the world's leading capitalist power, has
had a policy of lowering tariffs and allowing preferential trade to
specifically bolster key cold war hot spots. In Asia South Korea, like
Taiwan, benefitted a great deal by these policies -- policies that are, in
effect, a transfer of wealth to the target nation from the US.
One could argue that the USSR had a somewhat similar, though less overt,
policy with its allies, but the USSR had much less economic power and wealth
to work with, and did not engage in hyper-exploitation in other areas of the
world to help balance its net loss to targetted countries like Korea.
