Re: [Marxism] Sherry Wolf on gay marriage and divorce--from the Democrats

This isn't an analogy at all.

There are two political movements at odds with each other.  One is the pro-same
sex marriage camp, the other is the anti-gay marriage camp.

One is being exposed to the oppression of the capitalist state and society, to
the political duplicity of the Democratic Party, including the President down
to the Mayor of San Francisco.  This camp is demanding that a social
institution that is the traditional territority of the Right, the Church and
every self-seeking demogogue deems "sacred".  It this struggle, betrayal after
betrayal, lesson after lesson, teach the largely working class movement the
craven, deceptive, nature of U.S. politics.

The other camp, the anti-gay marriage camp has the support of the rightwing
church machine and gets a hearing by the semi-homophobic majority of the
population.  It is a political minority on the landscape.  It is catered to by
the Republican party and feared by the Democratic leadership.   This camp seeks
to demonize the change in marriage definition as the work of an evil minority.
In a time of economic crisis, this rightwing movement could easily spawn a
widespread semi-fascist political force eager to scapegoat the LGBT population
for "taking away" or "destroying" institutions of American culture.

It is not in the class interests of the working class majority to limit
marriage to male and female couples.  It is in the interst of the working class
to ally itself with this ascentent social movement so that it can unify itself
and prepare itself for the immediate political challenge it faces: the economic
crisis.  The right wing is attempting to divert attention about the impact of
the economic crisis and placing the bait at the feet of us homosexuals.

So?

Consider an analogy:

Millions of progressive-minded people also voted for Obama, and it was
important to them. Does that mean that we should necessarily support
Obama?
Well, no.
