Re: [Marxism] Israel's Growing Internal Divide

Hi Nestor,

Hope all is well in the cradle of the next revolution. I am very interested
in the ideology of Zionism and I suppose that does have the risk of becoming
overly involved in abstract thought. But every human endeavour has to have a
moral component or it colapses in on itself and it is fascinating to watch
that dialectic unfold in Israel. That is surely what Deutscher meant by
'mann kann sich totsiegen" when he worte to Ben Gurion after the 1967 war.

Netanyahu and Liebermann and Livni and Barak are mere brutes yet they seem
to represent a solid majority within Israel. Nevertheless there still
appears to be traces of a different politics. For instance the soul of
someone like Uri Avnery, or Gideon Levy or Avi Schlaim is worth engaging
with.

And you are quite right we do need to know more and my reading is very much
in its early stages and full of surprises. For instance when Schlaim wrote
in 1995 "most Israelis would be outraged by the suggestion that they are
conquerors" I was frankly amazed. But of course that is 14 years and at
least three wars and many massacres ago.

The Israeli children who wrote messages on the bombs destined for Lebanon
and the rabbis who dance on the Hill of Shame overlooking the flames of Gaza
would surely have little trouble now in accepting the label of "conqueror".

comradely regards

Gary
