I am afraid things are a bit more complex than assumed by Gary and
LÃko. The founders of the Zionist movement, particularly the
Socialists, did imagine a democratic state. Only that it was not a
state for Arabs. That is why some Socialist or ex-socialist historians
in Israel today lament that they did not perform a complete ethnic
cleansing in the early days (litterally) of the State.

The subjective component counts.

This, of course, does not mean to endorse Zionism. I, as a Jew (and
former Zionist, a sin of youth), am twice as forced as anyone else to
denounce it.

But I feel it is self-defeating to indulge in abstract, general definitions.
