Hi Einde,

This is truly a shocking report.  What is truly appalling is that those most
in need of love received the least.  It is as I have said of the treatment
of the export of the  "Leaving of Liverpool" children to Australia a tale of
the three Bs - brutality, buggery and betrayal.  But it is also important to
see this in class terms.  The cruelty of the orphanages is the hatred of the
working class at work.

I concur with your comment on the 'kindness' the inmates mentioned..  It is
very like the tales from the concentration camps of the occasional acts of
decency by some of the guards.

The positive side is that it probably is the final nail in the coffin of
that disgusting institution the Irish Roman Catholic Church. When I was a
boy, the priests in my home town strolled about like gods and we were
instructed to salute them or else be damned for ever.  Yet not so long ago I
had occasion to stroll up the streets of my child hood and was amused to see
the local cleric scurrying past me. After this report and the public
reaction that will follow, the Roman Catholic clergy will have a lot more
scurrying to do.

At their best the Irish are a deeply spiritual, generous and brave  people.
What this report will help them to realise is that the Roman Catholic church
is an enemy of that very same spirituality, generosity and courage.
