Re: [Marxism] ISO's conference.
While I agree with many of Chegitz's critiques of Solidarity (although
even then not with his tone), I can't agree with his claim that their
involvement in the labor movement makes no difference.
Yes, I would characterize Solidarity's union work as economist. It's
inadequate, and that's why I left. But -- just to take the example of
Dianne Feeley, who you mentioned in another context -- I'm damned glad
she and Wendy are active in leading the dissident autoworkers'
movement, small as it is (by coincidence there's a photo of Dianne at
kclabor.org/news.htm today above the headlines on the UAW's latest
sellout). And the economic crisis is leading Labor Notes to pose
broader political questions, starting with nationalization, however
limited are their initial steps in this direction.
I heard Dianne speak twice at this year's Left Forum on auto and
agreed with every thing she said. And you can't tell me that when she
defended the Labor Notes conference against the bumrush by SEIU thugs
-- and got a nasty cut on her head for her pains -- that it made no
difference.
