Re: [Marxism] ISO's conference.

As a new ISO member I will say that my experience thus far in Chicago
is encouraging. We've had discussions on Cuba in my branch that were
only critical in the sense that we were trying to understand why Cuba
isn't the kind of socialism we want but everyone I've talked to seemed
open to the idea that Cuba is the most socialist country in the world
and that the revolution is something to be defended. I too was turned
off to the ISO by the perceived anti-Cuba line and I think that is one
thing that we need to improve upon. Again, I feel like this position
is more than anything intended to differentiate the ISO from groups
that idealize the Cuban Revolution. I will definitely look into the
readings that Louis recommended on Cuban society.

For what its worth in Chicago an ISO comrade is heavily involved in
the organizing of the immigrants rights movement (M10) and spoke at
the main May Day rally this year.

I was encouraged to see that we will have an NPA comrade giving two
talks at the Friday session in Chicago (unfortunately not in San
Francisco) and I think whether the ISO officially endorses the NPA
approach it will further a healthy debate that I've had with a few ISO
comrades. While conditions in France are much different and
potentially more conducive to a broader anti-capitalist party I think
if the NPA does grow beyond the limits of the LCR by leaps and bounds
then it will give the argument for some sort of regroupment that much
more weight. Another encouraging thing that I mentioned a few days ago
is the fact that a former IS-tendency group in Germany is now part of
Die Linke and from what I heard is playing an important part in trying
to make it a more radical/activist party than simply a
parliamentary/electoral one.
