Re: [Marxism] The 2009 Indian Elections
With many apologies for self-promotion, a recent article of mine on the
recently concluded Indian elections that appears on ‘Macroscan’, a left-wing
website on the Indian economy.
A quote from the paper:
"The breaking-up of the ideological convergence around neoliberal economic
policy taken along with the democratic upsurge that continues to animate our
politics makes the 2009 Lok Sabha elections of particular importance. It
opens up the possibility that political pressure from the democratic upsurge
might finally be able to force the crafting of a truly inclusive economic
policy that works not only for the elite and the upper middle class but also
for India's toiling masses, both urban and rural, for lower castes, for
women, for muslims, for adivasis. None of this might happen. But the space
within which it could happen has been opened up."

This is essentially a political economy of growth view of the elections. And
is somewhat different from the other articles posted by Politicus E (see
below). It is a part of my larger project of a book on the political economy
of growth in India. Comments for will be greatly appreciated and very
welcome
