I always insist on this fact whenever I am speaking publicly on the
Palestinian question, because I think it is essential that people face up to
the reality that is Israel the logic of Zionism is playing itself out. It
always was a colonial project that had a new spin on the manifest destiny
bit. "We are coming home" was the Zionist creed. Their contemporaries
meanwhile were being urged to "take up the white man's burden". The latter
ideology at least left a space for the non-white man. Of course the space
was that of brutally exploited labour.

It seems though to be a crucial element in Zionist ideology that they did
the brutal work themselves. If one recalls Uri Avnery's recent piece on the
songs the "pioneers" used to sing of their heroic days of back breaking
labour, one can get a glimpse of the role of the kibbutzim in the
justification of the Zionist colonial project. They proclaimed that they
did not come to exploit Arab labour but to toil themselves. Again this is
ideological fluff and a good deal of use was made of cheap Arab labour.

That fact was at odd with the core logic of Zionism which always implied a
final solution of the "Arab problem" - ethnic cleansing or "transfer" as
they preferred to call it. So they have never wanted a one state where Jews
and Arabs could live in harmony. Nor do they want a two state solution.
Eretz Israel was and is the dream that drives on the likes of Netanyahu and
Liebermann and Barak. They differ only to the extent to which they are
prepared to say so publicly.

Finally is the statistic that 85% of Israelis approved of the slaughter of
Gaza a source for despair? I think not. To me it is proof that that
dialectic of the "totsiegen" (Victorying oneself to death) is working.
How? Well the world saw the horror of Gaza and has to reconcile that with
the image of the Israelis dancing on the "hill of shame" overlooking the
slaughter. The conclusion is - well obvious - Israel is a blight unto the
world. In other words the 85% support for the massacre in Gaza serves to
delegitimate Israel and that will lead inexorably to its down fall.
