China's economy prior to the revolution was far more complicated than that 
of an autocratic, feudal society.  Land tenure policies varied extensively 
from region to region, and even within regions.  The "feudal" nature of 
these policies was not at all similar to the feudalism of Europe prior to 
the upheavals of the 17th, 18th, 19th centuries.

Small peasant production, unbound by feudal ownership/rent requirements was 
quite extensive-- as was a commercial network based on rural home 
manufacture/rural excess labor supply.

In certain areas, particularly in/around/of the foreign concessions a true 
wage-labor capitalism was practiced by both foreign an native owners, but 
this capitalism encountered tremendous obstacles not in the feudal land 
tenure of the countryside, but in the small peasant production that 
supported the commercial network of home manufacturing.

As always, I recommend the works of Philip CC Huang on the peasantry in 
China.

On another note,  I think your depiction of Mao as a "hard-nosed," 
"bare-knuckled," "down to earth guy,"  really misses the point since, first 
of all, the abstract idealistic bullshit you find so offensive comes from 
Mao himself [and is in fact one of the central themes of Maoist 
"revolutionary" activity],  and misses the point-- the point being what 
exactly the Chinese revolution achieved, how it achieved it, and why that 
revolution was reversed in half the time it took to defeat the October 
revolution.
