I actually meant this "in character". How would *Picard* explain these things
without sounding like an idiot?

But that's not the main point, of course. The main point is how progressive
changes could be communicated to the viewer/reader/listener...

Yep.

One thing to avoid would be any temptation to dress everyone the same. This has
historically been one of the standard features of bad movie SF.

It would be cool if progressive SF films could avoid this - and thus make the
point that socialism is how individuals become genuinely free.

If only I was a filmmaker - or a writer, or, well, anyone with any artistic
abilities whatsoever... :(
