Ah, but it *did* work--the expectation of results plus the opium-
induced feeling of relief is itself genuinely therapeutic. As
Gurdjieff** wrote, "And now listen to what that kind pharmacist there
said to me further...'all that is required of any remedy is that it
should be known to be a good one'."
