Since many (not all) medical doctors are just shills for the pharmaceutical
industry anyway, the fact that Merck paid Elsevier to create yet another
scientistic marketing tool to peddle its wares is not surprising.
The drug salesmen probably use it for handouts when they make their regular
rounds to pitch the newest snake oil.
Back in the 19th century the cure-all tonic served a similar purpose. Its
distinct advantage over the current crop is that more often than not it
contained opium. So even if it did not work it you could at least get high.
Oh, and even though it was addictive it was not harmful enough to kill you.
