I don't think the author of this list, China Mieville, can be accused of
that attitude - after all, one of the authors listed is Iain M. Banks,
who also write "serious" literary fiction under the name Iain Banks -
and Mervyn Peake is considered to be "serious" literary fiction too.

I particularly liked his joint alternative history book with Bruce
Stirling, "The Difference Engine" - Marx as leader of the new York
commune and Lord Engels in the House of Lords - and that's just the
background!
